Grand jury indicts Providence man in connection to fatal café shooting

A grand jury indicted one of the two Providence men arrested in connection to a fatal shooting inside a café in the capital city last year.

Juan Rivera, 34, was charged Tuesday with the following:

  • One count of murder one count of conspiracy to commit murder
  • One count of discharging a firearm while in commission of a crime of violence resulting in death
  • One count of possessing a firearm after convicted of a crime of violence
  • one count of possession of a pistol without a license
  • one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon

On Sept. 25, Providence police said Rivera, along with 36-year-old Julio Castro, shot 30-year-old Jorge Garcia inside of Roques Café on Broad Street.

Maj. David Lapatin said the two men knew the Garcia and planned the shooting.

The suspects were arrested in November.

The 34-year-old is scheduled to face a Providence Superior Court judge later this month.
