Johnston Amazon facility opening delayed to 2024

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Mayor Joe Polisena Jr. said that the new Amazon facility being constructed in the town will not open until 2024.
The distribution center off of Route 6 was originally expected to open later this year.
“While this project is fully funded and managed by Amazon, the town stands ready to help Amazon if called upon,” Polisena Jr. said.
The 3.8 million square-foot facility was approved by the town council in 2021.
Amazon Public Relations spokesperson Caitlin McLaughlin said that the project was delayed due to economic pressures such as supply chain and inflationary challenges, but the company remains focused on opening next year.
“We’ve spent nearly $300 million on this project to date, which includes local investments in labor and supplies,” she said. “The Johnston Fulfillment Center remains a significant part of our future plans in New England.”
Polisena Jr. added that he expects the facility to bring more than 1,000 jobs to the town.
Members of the Rhode Island Commerce Community visited the facility Wednesday and said that the facility is expected to bring $145 million in tax revenue over the next 20 years.
