Jones Leads Brown Past PC In Crosstown Women’s Hoops Showdown

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  – Brown women’s basketball earned its second-straight win against a Big East team with a 61-56 win over Providence on Wednesday night (Nov. 15). Kyla Jones led Brown with 23 points.

Jones’ 23 points marked her 10th 20-point game of her career as the senior guard was 7-for-9 from the floor and 8-for-12 from the free throw line. It was a season-high in points for Jones and was the highest point total by a Bear this season.

Isabella Mauricio reached double-figures for the first time this season with 12 points and Olivia Young finished the game with eight points. Grace Arnolie had her double-digit point streak snapped with seven points but led Brown with three assists on the night.

Brown outrebounded Providence 33-32 with Alyssa Moreland grabbing a season-high seven rebounds. Both Mya Murray and Jones finished the night with four rebounds. Ada Anamekwe tallied three blocked shots in the game.

Providence held a four-point lead through the middle of the first quarter before baskets by Mauricio and Anamekwe tied the score at 14 at the end of the quarter.

During the second quarter, threes by Jones, Young and Arnolie helped the Bears build a seven-point lead at 26-19 with 2:53 left. Arnoli’s three was the last point Brown would score in the half as Providence ended the half on an 8-0 run to lead by one at the break.

Brown exploded out of halftime with a 9-1 run that featured a layup from Moreland, a jumper form Arnolie and five points from Jones as the Bears went up 35-28. Providence again cut the lead to three but Young responded with a three and Arnolie hit a pull-up jumper to push the lead back to eight.

A layup by the Friars with 3:09 left in the quarter made it a four-point game but Brown held Providence scoreless for the rest of the quarter and hit three free throws to lead by seven with ten minutes to play.

Brown’s lead shrunk to two just two minutes into the fourth quarter but Mauricio and Moreland hut buckets and Jones added two free throws to make the score 52-44. The Bears tried to keep Providence at bay but the Friars whittled away Brown’s lead with a three cutting the Bears advantage to one with 1:39 left on the clock.

Brown couldn’t add to its advantage, missing two free throws and turning the ball over twice and a foul with 21 seconds on the clock put Providence at the free throw line with a chance to take the lead. Providence missed both free throws and Jones pulled down the rebound and was fouled.

The Chicago, Ill., native stepped to the free throw line and knocked down both free throws. After a missed three from the Friars, Murray hit two free throws to ice the game
