Kansas State Outlasts PC Friars In OT at Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Providence College men’s basketball team was defeated by Kansas State (3-1), 73-70, in overtime in the team’s first game at the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship on Friday, November 17 at the Baha Mar Convention Center in Nassau, Bahamas. Junior Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) led the way for the Friars scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill.) finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and recording a game-high 10 rebounds. The Friars fell to a 3-1 on the season with the loss.

“It was a battle,” Head Coach Kim English said.  “It was a gritty contest, a physical contest. Our team had a lot of chances for victory. I give a ton of credit to the Kansas State program that we have a ton of respect for.”

 

FIRST HALF: 

•Jaden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) knocked down a three-pointer to start the scoring for the Friars.

•The Friars led, 10-7, at the first media timeout (15:33 mark). Hopkins led the PC offense with four points.

•Heading into the second media timeout with 11:39 on the clock, Providence led, 15-9, shooting 5-7 from the field. The Wildcats struggled offensively, recording five turnovers in 5:08 minutes. At the 13:11 mark, Cam Carter made a second-chance jumper to end the Wildcat’s 2:58 scoring drought.

• The Friars endured a 3:56 scoreless run while Kansas State went on a 6-0 scoring drive to give the Wildcats their first lead since the 18:12 minute mark. With 3:21 left, Kansas State led, 22-18.

• The Wildcats held a three-point advantage over the Friars entering halftime, 29-26.

•Providence shot 8-26 (30.8%) from the field, 4-10 (40.0 %) from three and 6-8 (75.0 %) from the free throw line.

•Kansas State shot 10-29 (34.5 %) from the field, 3-8 (37.5 %) from three and 6-6 (100 %) from the free throw line.

 

SECOND HALF:

• Hopkins scored a fast-break layup and a subsequent free throw to open the scoring for the second half and tie the game, 29-29.

• At the 17:55 minute mark, Carter followed up with a fast-break reverse layup to give lead back to the Friars and help the team to a 6-0 scoring run, putting the game at 31-29.

•With the two points in the second half, Carter became the first Friar to register double-digit points (11).

• Arthur Kaluma ended the scoring drought for Kansas State, making back-to-back three-pointers to put the Wildcats back on top, 31-35.

• The Friars trailed four points behind the Wildcats entering 12-minute media timeout, 35-39.

• At the 10:25 mark, Carter made a driving-layup and a one-shot free throw to give the Friars a slim, one-point lead, 43-42. This marked the seventh lead-change of the game.

• Over the span of 2:41 minutes, Providence went on a 9-0 scoring drive to force a Kansas State timeout with 7:59 left.

• With 6:48 left to play, Tylor Perry made a three-point jumper and free-throw to give the lead back to Kansas State, 49-47.

• Rafael Castro (Dover, N.J.) knocked down a rebound layup entering the final media timeout to give Providence a one-point advantage over the Wildcats at the 3:38 mark, 54-53.

• Josh Oduro (Gainsville, Va.) fouled out at the 1:37 mark.

• The game continued to be a back-and-forth matchup. With 1:23 left to play, both teams were tied at 57-57.

• With 9.8 seconds left, the Friars claimed a lost-ball turnover to give them possession and the last shooting opportunity of regulation time. Following a missed shot, the score remained leveled at 57 and the game entered overtime play.

 

FIRST OVERTIME: 

•Hopkins started the overtime scoring for Providence following a made free-throw.

•At the 2:18 mark, Kansas State held a four-point lead over Providence, 65-61.

• Rafael Castro flushed a rebound dunk to help the Friars cut the deficit to two, 63-65.

• Kansas State remained out of reach for the Friars, David N’guessan led the way in the third period with six points. Arthur Kaluma shot a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line.

•Providence shot 4-12 (33.3%) from the field and 5-7 (71.4%) from the free throw line. The Friars did not attempt a three.

•Kansas State shot 4-5 (80.0%) from the field, 1-1 (100%) from three, and 7-9 (77.8%) from the free throw line.

 

NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS: 

•Providence finished 24-68 (35.3 %) from the field, 5-22 (22.7 %) from three and 17-24 (70.8 %) from the free throw line.

•Kansas State finished 21-57 (36.8 %) from the field, 8-22 (36.7 %) from three and 23-27 (85.2%) from the free throw line.

•Four players finished in double figures for the Friars, Josh Oduro (10), Bryce Hopkins (10), Ticket Gaines (10) and Devin Carter (19).

•Carter hauled a in seven rebounds for the Friars and Hopkins had 10.

• Freshman Garwey Dual led the Friars with three assists.

• Kansas State’s Tylor Perry led the Wildcat offense with 24 points.

•There were 10 lead changes and 10 ties throughout the match.

•Tonight was the Friar’s first all-time appearance in the Bahamas.

•This match marked the first meeting between the Wildcats since March 12, 1977 where the Friars lost, 87-80, in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Kansas State now leads the all-time series record, 2-0.

•The last time Providence entered overtime play was February 14, 2023 when the Friars defeated the Creighton University Bluejays, 94-86, in double overtime.

•The Friars will play in the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship consolation match against the University of Georgia on Sunday, Nov.19 at the Baha Mar Convention Center in Nassau, Bahamas. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
