How it Happened
Rhode Island battled back from a 15-point deficit to take a lead in the second half, but George Washington pulled away down the stretch. The Revolutionaries beat URI 75-67 Wednesday night.
Rhode Island (12-3, 1-2 Atlantic 10) trailed 36-21 with 4:26 remaining before the half. The Rams outscored George Washington (14-2, 2-1 A-10) 9-2 to trim the deficit to seven points before the break.
The Rams kept chipping away in the second half, and an 8-0 run that was punctuated by a Quentin Diboundje fastbreak dunk tied the score at 55-55 with 9:31 to go. Rhody took its first lead a minute later on a Sebastian Thomas free throw that put the home team up 58-57.
The final four minutes belong to George Washington. Forward Sean Hansen and guard Jacoi Hutchinson converted three-point plays on back-to-back possessions as the Revolutionaries turned a tie game into a six-point lead at 67-61. The lead got back up to as many as 10 as George Washington put the game away by going 8-for-8 at the line over the final 4:14.
