MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Aquidneck Island Police Departments, along with the Rhode Island State Police, are notifying the public of enhanced traffic enforcement, mostly for people suspected of drunk driving this St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

The annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 16.

Police said that each year the parade’s celebratory events lead to arrests or worse scenarios.

Effective dates of increased traffic monitoring are March 15 to March 17, around the clock.

In addition to escalated police presence, the Rhode Island DUI Task Force ‘B.A.T. Mobile’, a 40-foot-long modified bus, equipped with two stainless-steel jail cells, two breathalyzers, and other DUI-enforcement equipment, will appear.

Last year, police arrested 59 people for driving under the influence, and and additional 433 speeding tickets were issued.

Officials urge people to plan for a sober ride ahead of time.

Free Uber service will be available for rides from downtown Newport March 16 at 1 p.m. until March 17 at 2 a.m.
