Man awaiting trial on child molestation charges dies

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Corrections said that a man who was awaiting trial on child molestation died on Sept. 23.

Chief of Information and Public Relations J.R. Ventura said Nicholas Oliveira died under home confinement from a “cause that appeared self-inflicted.”

Ventura added that the incident is under investigation by state police.

Oliveira was previously charged with sexually assaulting a child in Killingly, Connecticut as well as for engaging in sexual conduct with two minors.

He was also a former Cumberland teacher.

This individual was in home confinement awaiting trial for the charge of child molestation in the second degree. We were notified Monday, Sept. 23, 2-24, that he died, and the cause appears to be self-inflicted. The case is under investigation by the state police.
