PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island’s new professional men’s soccer team unveiled its mascot on Thursday.

Chip the harbor seal is the newest addition to the Rhode Island FC squad.

The harbor seal is the state’s official marine mammal.

Chip has an anchor nose, spots in the shape of the RIFC logo, and 13 whiskers, as Rhode Island is the 13th state. His lucky number is 401.

“Having a top-notch fan experience is a key priority for all of us at Rhode Island FC. Chip was created with our fans’ input and is an exciting and fun addition to our ever-growing Rhode Island FC team,” said President of RIFC, Brett Luy.

Chip’s favorite food is fish and chips and quahogs. His guilty pleasure is New York System wieners, ideally with some coffee milk.

He is described as energetic, optimistic, and charismatic — and a little bit salty.

“Chip provides us with an even more direct connection to the bay and the ocean,” Luy said. “We look forward to seeing Chip cheer for our club in the stands with our fans starting in March.”

Chip will make his first public appearances thus weekend at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League High School Soccer Championships at Rhode Island College.

Construction of a new soccer stadium is underway in Pawtucket for the team.

The team signed its first official player, goalkeeper Koke Vegas, last week.

Season ticket memberships for the RIFC are available for purchase.

The packages include tickets to the 17 home matches at Beirne Stadium at Bryant University, and some other season ticketholder perks.
