PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Multiple school districts are letting students out early Thursday, with some citing the heat as a factor.

Cumberland School Department Superintendent Philip Thornton said he made the decision after visiting schools in the district on Wednesday and seeing that Thursday would be even warmer.

“Classrooms are certainly warm and buildings with classrooms on second floors are even warmer in temperature,” he said.

He added that in addition to early dismissal, water will be “easily accessible for everyone,” there will be no after school activities, and teachers are making adjustments to physical education classes, the recess schedule, and are providing alternative teaching areas for students.

The dismissal times for Cumberland schools are as follows:

  • Cumberland High School will dismiss at 10:55 a.m.
  • North Cumberland and Joseph L. McCourt Middle Schools will dismiss at 11:35 a.m.
  • B.F. Norton School and Garvin Memorial School will dismiss at 11:55 a.m.
  • Ashton School, Community School and J.J. McLaughlin Cumberland Hill School will dismiss at 12:40 p.m.
  • Cumberland Preschool will be closed.
