Narragansett’s Lighthouse Inn to be demolished, documents say

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE) — What remains of the Lighthouse Inn on Great Island Road in Narragansett is set to be demolished after plans to redevelop the property fell short.
According to documents obtained by ABC 6 News, the property, which was built in 1970, was inspected and found to contain asbestos, lead paint and other hazardous building materials, rendering the property unusable.
According to those same documents, it is now in the hands of the state to hire a contractor who is willing and able to safely demolish the structure without having the hazardous materials impact the immediate area.
The official solicitation for the project from State Purchasing can be found here.
In a statement to ABC 6, a representative from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said in part, “[The demolition] is a necessity on which all sides agree. We will be in a better position to answer questions about the demolition in the coming days.”
While it is unclear when the property will be demolished, bidding is open until 11 a.m. on November 30 for contractors who are willing to take on the job.
Public records show that the inn was closed in 2017 after the former owners filed for bankruptcy.
