Newport announces total Cliff Walk repair funding reaches $22 million
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Millions in federal funds to support the restoration and preservation of the Newport Cliff Walk have been officially awarded to the city by the Federal Highway Administration.
According to a Facebook post from the City of Newport, $11 million in PROTECT grants have been freed up for the project.
It represents the largest single federal grant award in Newport history and brings the total funding for Cliff Walk restoration to $22 million.
This tally includes federal, state and local funding.
The post cites the March 2022 collapse near the 40 Steps as the city’s starting point in seeking and securing the funding for repairs.
The funding line items work out to the following:
- $11 million – PROTECT Grant
- $5 million – Congressional Earmark (FY2024)
- $3 million – State Green Bond
- $3.75 million – Newport’s 2024 General Obligation Bond
