PC Friars Battle To Win Over Hampton Tuesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s basketball team defeated the Hampton Pirates (1-2), 60-51, in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) and Bensley Joseph (Arlington, Mass.) each scored a team-high 13 points and Pierre tacked on six rebounds. Wesley Cardet Jr. (Tallahassee, Fla.) aided the team with 10 points.

FIRST HALF: 

• Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) opened the game’s scoring in the Friars’ first possession with a three. Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin City, Nigeria) followed with a put-back dunk.

• At the first media timeout (16:00), the Friars held a 5-0 advantage over the Pirates.

• Exiting the timeout, Pierre flushed another three to extend Providence’s lead to 8-0.

• Hampton scored its first points off a jumper in the paint six minutes into the game (13:16).

• The Friars entered a scoring drought. At the 12-under timeout, PC led, 8-4.

• PC’s scoreless streak persisted as the Pirates initiated a scoring drive, adding 11 points to the board.

• Hampton found its first lead of the game with 9:12 to go in the half. Entering the under-8 timeout (8:28), Friars trailed, 11-8.

• Pierre snapped the Friars eight-minute scoring drought with another three. Bensley Joseph (Arlington, Mass.) scored his first points of the game with a driving layup.

• The two teams continued to go back-and-forth for the remainder of the half. Entering the locker room, the Friars trailed, 30-22.

• Pierre accounted for nine of the Friars’ 22 first half points (40.9%).

• Providence shot 7-18 (38.9%) from the field, 5-14 (35.7%) from three, and 3-8 (XX.X%) from the free-throw line.

• Hampton shot 10-32 (31.3%) from the field, 3-13 (23.1%) from three, and 7-7 (100.0%) from the free-throw line.

SECOND HALF: 

• Wesley Cardet Jr. (Tallahassee, Fla.) initiated the second half scoring with a three. Pierre followed with a layup in the paint that cut the PC deficit to three, 30-27.

• With 13:37 left in the half, Joseph ignited a six-point scoring drive, sinking his second three-pointer that gave Providence its first lead since 9:12 in the first.

• Shortly after, Pierre added a layup to extend the Friars’ run to 7-0 and prompted Hampton to call a timeout with 12:25 remaining. PC held a 37-34 lead, capping off a 15-4 surge in the second half.

• Freshman Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) scored all four points in a quick surge that pushed the Friars to a six-point lead, 42-36.

• The Pirates answered with a six-point run to tie the game at 42 with around nine minutes left in regulation.

• Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.) halted Hampton’s scoring streak with a three-pointer. At the under-8 timeout, the Friars held a narrow three-point lead, 45-42.

• Following the timeout, Joseph tossed a lob to Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J.), who slammed it home with an alley-oop dunk.

• Hampton tied the score at 47. With 5:43 on the clock, Floyd ensued with another dunk to give the Friars their fourth lead of the game, 52-47.

• The Friars finished the final five minutes outscoring the Pirates 13-4.

• At the final media timeout (00:43), Friars led, 56-51.

• The Pirates made just one of their final nine field goal attempts.

HIGHLIGHTS: 

• Providence finished 20-46 (43.5%) from the field, 10-29 (34.5%) from three and 10-20 (50.0%) from the free throw line.

• Hampton finished 16-56 (28.6%) from the field, 7-25 (28.0%) from three and 12-13 (92.3%) from the free throw line.

• Providence outscored Hampton, 38-21, in the second half.

• PC outrebounded Hampton, 38-31.

• Four Friars posted double-digit positive impacts in the plus-minus column: Joseph led with +18, Cardet had +12, and both Joseph and DeLaurier recorded +10, reflecting the team’s scoring advantage when they were on the court.

• The Friars outscored the Pirates in points in the paint (20-10), and second-chance points (10-5).

• Noah Farrakhan led the Hampton offense with 16 points.

• Three Friars reached double figures in scoring: Joseph and Pierre each had 13 points, while Cardet contributed 10.

• Attendance: 7,821

• The Friars played their first game ever versus Hampton University.

• The Friars are now 26-3 versus current teams in the Coastal Athletic Association.

• The Friars have now opened the season with three straight wins for the fourth straight year.

The Friars will host the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (0-2) on Saturday, November 16 at Amica Mutual Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on FS2.

This will be the first matchup all-time between the two schools.
