PC Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Bryant In Bulldogs Season Opener Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s lacrosse team defeated Bryant, 15-8, on Saturday, Feb. 8 in Smithfield, R.I. The Friars improved to 2-0 on the season. This marks the Friars first win over Bryant since 2020. Ryan Bell (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Parker Kennedy (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) paced the Friars’ offense. Kennedy scored a career-high three goals and Bell added a game-high seven points on one goal and six assists. Bell moved into second place on the Friars’ all-time scoring list, with 185 points (52 goals, 184 assists). Bell also is the program’s all-time assist leader and he continues to build a cushion in the top spot (184 assists).
1st Quarter:
· Providence opened the game with back-to-back goals to take a 2-0 lead. Patrick McAleavey (Trumbull, Conn.) scored the first goal at 12:26, followed by Quinn McConnaughey’s (Cohasset, Mass.) goal at 12:16.
· Bryant responded with four-consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead.
· The Friars answered with a goal from Kennedy, assisted by Bell at 2:31.
· The Bulldog’s held a 5-3 lead after one quarter of play.
2nd Quarter:
· The Bulldogs kicked off the scoring in the second to extend their lead to 6-3.
· Providence responded with three-consecutive goals. Bell netted his first goal of the season, while Kennedy recorded his second goal of the day. Rhett Chambers tied the game 6-6 at the 3:58 mark.
· Dan Donahue (Weston, Mass.) recorded 10 saves in the first half.
· In the first half Bryant out shot Providence, 29-13.
3rd Quarter:
· Providence opened the second half with a face-off win and goal by McConnaughey to take a 7-6 lead.
· Bryant responded with two quick goals to reclaim the lead, 8-7.
· Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) answered with his first goal of the day to tie the game, 8-8.
· The Bulldogs scored two goal to regain the lead (10-8).
· Jack Horrigan (Lutherville, Md.) ended the third quarter with a goal to narrow Bryant’s lead to one heading into the final frame (10-9).
4th Quarter
· The Friars began the fourth quarter with a 4-1 run and took a 13-11 lead. Tyler Flynn (Setauket, N.Y.) recorded his first goal of the day, followed by Joseph, who notched his second. Stone Evans then netted his first career goal, followed by a tally from Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.)
· Bryant answered with a goal at 4:44 cutting the Friars lead to 13-12.
· Providence maintained its lead with a goal from Chambers at 3:24.
· The Friars sealed the victory with an empty-net goal from Kennedy (15-12), who finished the game with a hat trick.
Notes:
· McConnaughey scored a career-high two goals and went 13-26 at the face-off ‘X’.
· Kennedy recorded a career high three goals.
· Ryan Bell notched seven points on one goal and six assists. He moved into second place on the Friars’ all-time scoring list with 185 career points on 52 goals and 184 assists. In the game against Bryant, Bell jumped ahead of Chris McManus ’97 (183 points) and Matt Pymm ’99 (184 points).
· Ken Leahy ’00 is the Friars’ all-time leading point scorer with 188 points on 112 goals and 76 assists. Bell needs just four points to take sole possession of the mark.
· Evans recorded his first career goal.
· Donahue recorded a season high 15 saves.
· Albert Paniccia (East Norwich, N.Y.) led the defense with five groundballs and two caused turnovers.
