PC Women Take Down Sacred Heart For Third Straight Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women’s basketball team defeated Sacred Heart, 66-35, on Dec. 16 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. It marked the third-straight win for Providence, as it improved to 6-5 on the season. Sacred Heart dropped to 5-7 on the year. Olivia Olsen recorded her third double-double of the season on 19 points and 12 rebounds and added six blocked shots.
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars held an 8-6 lead at the media timeout despite a 2-7 (0.286) start from the field.
• Providence’s defense held the Pioneers to just two points from the free throw line in the final five minutes.
• The Friars led 18-8 at the break.
• Nariah Scott and Marta Morales Romero each scored five points in the quarter.
2ND QUARTER:
• A 6-0 spurt got the Friars out to a 14 point lead (24-10).
• Sacred Heart responded with a 5-0 run to close within single digits (24-15) at the media timeout (4:03).
• Morales Romero sank a pull-up jumper with 3:10 remaining to spark an 8-0 run during a span of 1:50 (32-15).
• The Friars took a 32-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
• Olivia Olsen led all scorers with nine points on 3-4 shooting from the field and a 3-3 showing from the foul line.
• Morales Romero added seven points and a team-high six boards and three assists.
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence led 44-26 at the media timeout (4:13).
• With 1:16 to play in the quarter, Olsen had registered her team-best third double-double of the season (15pts/10rebs).
• The Friars took a 52-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars were never threatened in the fourth, closing the final 4:54 of the game with a 7-0 scoring advantage.
NOTES:
• Olsen finished the night with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
• Olsen matched her career-high in blocks (six) and eclipsed 100 blocks in her career (101).
• Laryn Edwards cracked double figures for the first time as a Friar, with 10 points.
• Morales Romero completed the night with nine points, six boards and four assists.
• Brynn Farrell matched her career-high in assists (five) and added eight points and four rebounds.
• Providence won the battle of the boards, 42-33.
• The Friars’ defense held Sacred Heart to 23-percent shooting from the field (14-61).
• Offensively, Providence shot better than 50-percent for the second-straight game third time this season overall (.519, 27-52).
• Providence has won three-straight games and improved its record to 6-5, including a 5-2 mark at Alumni Hall.
• Tonight’s game vs. Sacred Heart marked the final non-conference home game of the season.
WHAT’S NEXT:
• The Friars will head to West Palm Beach, Fla. to face No. 10 Baylor and Kennesaw State in the 2023 West Palm Beach Classic. Providence opens the tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 20 against the Bears at 3:30 p.m. On Thursday, Dec. 21, the Friars face the KSU Owls at 1:15 p.m.
