Police: ‘Extreme’ speeds played role in fatal East Providence crash

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — As investigations continue into Friday’s deadly car crash, East Providence police cited high speeds and erratic driving as a lead cause at the moment.

Jacob Crenshaw, 24, was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital. His 27-year-old brother, Andrew, who was also in the car, remains in critical condition.

Capt. Michael Rapoza still urged the public to come forward with surveillance or evidence from Friday night’s crash.

“Right now, all the investigation is point towards speed being a factor in the collision,” said Rapoza.

The collision happened on Caitlin Avenue and Pawtucket Avenue in East Providence. Police believe the brothers’ car swerved across the road and hit another car head on. The 22-year-old driver was in stable condition.

Rapoza added, “We’ve received reports that it was extremely fast. The vehicle did lose control crossing into that northbound travel lane.”

Police say there is no sign at the moment drugs or alcohol played a role.

Anyone with video or information is asked to contact Sgt. Conor Debold at 401-270-3417 or Det. Kurt Ripke at 401-435-7600 ext. 20072.
