Rhode Island Democrats part of group urging Biden to ‘Pass the Torch’ to new candidate

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Two prominent Rhode Island Democrats are part of the leadership of a new organization aiming to convince President Joe Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee.

State Sen. Tiara Mack and former state Rep. Aaron Regunberg are on the steering committee for Pass the Torch, which said it wants the president to “pass the torch to a new ticket that has a better chance of beating Donald Trump.”

The organization said it is made up of Democratic activists, organizers, and voters, and have already organized actions including petition signatures, emails, and calls to members of Congress.

Biden has faced criticism as to his competence as a candidate after a debate against Trump.

“We represent the (at least) plurality of Democrats who want to unite behind a different candidate than Joe Biden — a group very few Democratic officials are speaking for,” organizers said.

The President has vowed to stay in the race.
