PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island and Massachusetts are bracing for more rain Wednesday after a downpour caused flooding in many communities.

The region is expected to see one or two inches of rain and possibly more thunderstorms.

Attleboro Public Schools will dismiss students an hour early head of the rain.

Gov. Maura Healey declared a state of emergency in the Bay State after “catastrophic” flash flooding impacted communities on Monday night.

In neighboring North Attleborough, crews were called to over 150 incidents, mostly related to the downpour.

In a press conference Tuesday, town leaders said about 200 homes had flood damage.

Those already dealing with flooding are fearful of further damage.

“I am petrified,” one resident told ABC 6 News. “I will probably have to leave the city to find one knowing everything is going to be sold out here.”

In Rhode Island, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley provided an update on flooding in the city, after a shopping plaza on Branch Avenue was nearly under water.

“This year’s storms have put Providence’s storm water system at capacity,” Smiley said. “Providence police assisted over 30 civilians to higher ground.”

One business at the plaza was deemed a total loss. Owners of the surrounding stores are hoping to reopen.

Smiley said residents can call 311 for city services in the event of any water emergencies.

The public is reminded to never drive through standing water and to always assume a downed power line is live.

The Red Cross provided additional guidance for safety, adding to keep children and animals away from flood water.
