Rhode Island residents can expect an increase in minimum wage in 2024

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training shared that the minimum wage is set to increase over the next couple of years.

The RI General Law states that the minimum wage is commenced to increase to $14.00 per hour on January 1, 2024, and increase to $15.00 in 2025.

Exceptions to this law include, but are not limited to:

  • Full-time students under the age of 19 working in non-profit or religious, educational, library, or community service organizations
  • 14 and 15-year-olds who do not work more than 24 hours per week; for any week which a 14 or 15-year-old works more than 24 hours, the applicable minimum rate must be paid
  • Workers employed in domestic services where employer/employee relationships do not exist
  • Service performed by an individual employed by a son or daughter or a minor child employed by the parent
  • Seasonal employees of resorts that are not open more than 6 months during the year, between May 1 and October 1
  • Employees of an organized camp having a structured program that are employed on an annual full-time basis and must not operate for more than 7 months in any calendar year, excluding employees of trailer camps
  • Employees receiving gratuities
