How it Happened
Playing most of its reserves for the final home game of the season, Rhode Island could not generate much offense as it fell to UMass Lowell 5-1 Tuesday afternoon.
URI saw its six-game win streak come to an end as UMass Lowell pitchers Kevin Zarnoch, Jr., Andres Hulfachor and Brian Foley combined to scatter seven hits and nine walks. Zarnoch, Jr. (1-7) went the first five innings, allowing one run on two hits. Hulfachor came on and pitched 3.0 scoreless inning before Foley pitched a scoreless ninth despite allowing two hits and two walks.
UMass Lowell drew first blood in the top of the fourth inning. After a one-out single by Carlos Martinez, Rowan Masse drilled a home run to left field to put the River Hawks on top, 2-0.
Rhode Island got one run back on a solo blast from Ryan King on the bottom of the inning. However, UMass Lowell got a pair of solo homers – one each by River Hart and Scott Donahue – to extend its lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth.
UMass Lowell added an insurance run in the sixth. Rhode Island managed to get the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. However, Brody Levin flew out to center with the bases loaded to end the game.
