Rhody Survives La Salle Scare, Wins Fourth Straight

Rhode Island won its fourth straight game, holding on to knock off La Salle, 66-63, Saturday afternoon.

The Rams led by 14 points with 10:13 remaing, but La Salle went on a 17-2 run. The Explorers pulled ahead, 55-54, on a Scott Spencer jumper with 4:44 to go. The teams traded baskets before Rhody used a 7-0 push to pull back in front, 62-57, following a pair of Fatts Russell free throws. La Salle did not go away, getting within one point when Ed Croswell made a layup with four seconds left. Russell hit two more free throws with one second left to secure the victory.

Junior Fatts Russell led Rhode Island with 13 points. He added two rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
Senior Jeff Dowtin also scored in double figures, finishing the game with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Redshirt sophomore Antwan Walker and freshman Mekhi Long both chipped in nine points off the bench.
Walker also grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go with a pair of assists and a pair of steals.
Long added four boards and one assist.
Senior Cyril Langevine led the team in blocks (3), steals (3), and assists (3). He added eight points and five rebounds.
Sophomore Tyrese Martin also had eight points and three steals for the Rams.
Sophomore Jermaine Harris added seven points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
As a team, Rhode Island forced La Salle into 22 turnovers, marking the fourrth time this season the Rams’ defense causes its opponent to turn the ball over at least 20 times.
