Sacramento Kings Select PC’s Devin Carter 13th Overall In 2024 NBA Draft

Providence College Press Release

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Wednesday, June 26, 2024, was a historic night for the Providence College men’s basketball program. Former Friar guard Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) was selected in the 2024 NBA Draft at the Barclays Center. Carter became the 44th Friar drafted all-time in the NBA and the first Friar picked in the NBA Draft since Kris Dunn was taken fifth overall and Ben Bentil was selected with the 51st pick by the Boston Celtics in the 2016 Draft. Carter was selected No. 13 by the Sacramento Kings, which also makes him the 12th Friar all-time to be drafted in the First Round of the NBA Draft and the third Friar selected in the NBA Draft Lottery since its inception in 1985 (Austin Croshere 12th pick by the Indiana Pacers in 1997 and Kris Dunn fifth pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2016). Additionally, Carter is the eighth-highest pick in program history.

“Friartown will always be home to me,” Carter said. “Providence College and the Friar fanbase welcomed me in like family and helped me grow as a person and a player. I will never forget the incredible people I met in Friartown and the support they gave me these past two years. I will always represent Friartown wherever my career takes me. I can’t wait to take this next step in my career and continue to grow in Sacramento.”

Carter had one of the top seasons in the history of Friar basketball in 2023-24. Carter was just the second Friar ever to be named BIG EAST Player of the Year. He accomplished that feat after he became the eighth PC player all-time to capture the league scoring title (21.4 ppg in 20 league contests). Carter also led the league in overall scoring (19.7 ppg). He also finished second in defensive rebounds (7.7), fifth in three-point field goal percentage (.377), third in minutes (35.3), third in rebounding (8.7), fifth in three-point field goals made (2.6) and fourth in steals (1.8). Carter scored 20 or more points 15 times in 2023-24 and he posted 14 double-doubles, including two games with 31 points and 13 rebounds — at St. John’s on January 10 and versus DePaul on February 17. He also was named Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, First Team All-BIG EAST, Associated Press First Team All-BIG EAST, BIG EAST All-Tournament Team, NABC All-District 5 First Team, Naismith Player of the Year Semifinalist, Lute Olsen Player of the Year Finalist and Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year Finalist.

“Tonight was a very special moment for Devin and his family,” Providence Head Coach Kim English said. “He has worked tirelessly to make the first step of his dream come true and our fan base should feel a great sense of pride in his achievement. We are excited to watch him play at the next level. I believe Devin will be able to make an impact in the NBA and his work ethic will go a long way to helping him have a successful career.”

In two seasons at Providence, Carter scored 1,080 points (16.4 ppg) and grabbed 449 rebounds (6.8 rpg). He also added 117 steals and 67 blocks in 66 games.
