Shoppers prepare for Tax Free Weekend in Massachusetts

WRENTHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — The state of Massachusetts will hold its annual sales tax holiday Saturday and Sunday. Most retail items under $2,500 are exempt from the usual 6.25% sales tax.

Shoppers at the Wrentham Outlets were ready for the tax-free weekend.

Sophie Crandall of Franklin, Mass. said, “I buy too many clothes all the time. I might as well shop when there is no tax.”

The state said the tax exemption generally applies to items like clothing unless it costs more than $175.

Back to school shopping is a popular activity this time of year, just in time for the sale.

Jean Singleton of Cumberland, R.I., said,  “The biggest thing we are looking for is going back to school clothes.”

Crandall also told ABC 6 News that she was at the outlets doing her back to school shopping.

Some shoppers however, told ABC 6 that they were not aware the annual holiday weekend had already arrived.

“I haven’t really heard too much about it this year. I think this year they were not putting it out as much and I think they should be more forthcoming about it and let people know about it,” Singleton continued.

No tax will be due if exchanges or returns are made after this weekend.
