Suspect accused of shooting 17-year-old to death in Providence turns himself in

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A man accused of shooting a 17-year-old to death in Providence last month turned himself in to police last week, according to authorities.
Maj. David Lapatin said that Samuel Medina, 24, turned himself in on Thursday. He was arraigned the next day on murder and gun charges.
Court records show that Medina was held without bail.
The 24-year-old is accused of shooting and killing Darnell Whitford on July 14 on Dexter and Waldo streets.
Police said Whitford was walking with a female friend, when a car pulled up next to them. The 24-year-old and and several other men then exited the car and began arguing with the teenager.
That’s when police said Medina shot Whitford and took off.
The 17-year-old was taken to the Rhode Island Hospital, where he later died.
