Trial begins for woman accused in 2020 death of infant

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The trial for the woman accused of letting an infant die in Cranston in 2020 will begin Tuesday.

Katherine Castaneda was arrested in 2022 and charged with the manslaughter of Jayson Flores.

The 9-month-old was rushed to a hospital in December of 2020 after he was found not breathing.

The Department of Children, Youth and Families ruled that Flores died as a result of maltreatment.

Castaneda’s trial begins at 9:30 a.m. at Kent County Courthouse.
