URI Baseball Builds Early Lead In Midweek Win at Brown
Brown University Press Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team dropped a midweek showdown with in-state rival URI on Wednesday afternoon, falling by a score of 16-6 in seven innings at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.
Junior Mark Henshon reached base twice via a walk and a bases clearing three-run double. Junior DJ Dillehay also had a hit and an RBI for Brown.
Rhody struck for three runs in the first inning, starting with a double and a walk with one out, followed by a two-run triple off the wall in right-center, and an RBI ground ball. The Rams added four more in the second on three hits, including a leadoff homer to hold a 7-0 lead. Three straight hits to start the third pushed the lead to 10-0.
Brown sent 10 men to the plate in the third and cut the deficit in half, with all the runs coming after two outs. Dillehay knocked in the first run with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, Henshon smoked a three-run double into the left field corner, and another run came in on a throwing error to get the Bears within 10-5.
In the fourth, Alex Benevento lifted a sac fly to right field to bring home another run that pulled Brown within 10-6.
After Brown pitching retired seven straight Rhody hitters at one point, the Rams took back control of the game in the fifth, loading the bases with one out to set the table for a grand slam to center field by Eric Genther. URI tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded walk and a sac fly to push the score to 16-6 and force the implementation of the 10-run rule after seven innings.
The Bears will hit the road for a four-game stretch starting this Saturday with an Ivy League doubleheader at Princeton. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m. on ESPN+. The Bears and Tigers will then play a single game on Sunday at noon, followed by a non-league matchup next Wednesday, April 23 at URI.
