Weekend closures of Interstate 95 to resume Labor Day weekend

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation will resume consecutive weekend closures of a section of Interstate 95 on Friday.

The closures will be near Route 10, or exit 33, at the Cranston and Providence line during replacement of the Wellington Avenue Bridge.

The changes will last until Sept. 18.

The department said drivers should expect days and are advised to use other routes like Route 10 and Interstate 295.

Lanes will be closed on both sides of the highway each weekend as crews demolish and replace different parts of the bridge.

The department said there will be a lane split with two lanes on either side of the work zone this week and the week of Sept. 11.

The bridge replacement process will go by the following schedule:

  • Sept. 1-4 — The two right lanes on I-95 south and the left lane on I-95 north will be closed starting 7 p.m. on Friday. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. Exit 33 A & B to Route 10 will be closed for I-95 south drivers. Drivers headed to Route 10 will have to take Jefferson Boulevard and come back on I-95 north.
  • Sept. 4-7 —  There will be no lane split, northbound or southbound.
  • Sept. 8 — There will be a lane split on I-95 north near Route 10 in Cranston, with two lanes on either side of the split. All lanes will go through.
  • Sept. 8-11 — The two left lanes on I-95 north and the left lane on I-95 south will be closed starting at 7 p.m. on Friday. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
  • Sept. 11-15 — There will be a lane split on I-95 north near Route 10 in Cranston, with two lanes on either side of the split. All lanes will go through.
  • Sept. 15-18 — The two right lanes on I-95 north and the left lane on I-95 south will be closed starting at 7 p.m. Friday. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. There will be no lane split, northbound or southbound.

A signed detour will be posted for Wellington Avenue.
