Young’s Three-Point Shooting Helping Brown Women’s Hoops In Rout of Stonehill

PROVIDENCE, R.I. The Brown women’s basketball team (4-5) defeated the Stonehill Skyhawks (2-6) 78-45 on Thursday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

Thursday night’s win marks Brown’s largest win (33 points) over a DI opponent since their 65-39 (26 points) win over Dartmouth last season.

Sophomore guard Olivia Young went five for eight in three-pointers, setting a new career high. Young surpassed her previous career high of four three pointers against Cornell last season.

Junior forward Alyssa Moreland made her return after suffering an injury that left her out of comission for the start of the season. Moreland posted six points and three rebounds in her return.

“It was great to play a good game here at home, and I think that our team has been building in last couple of games with really wanting to have a stronger presence on both ends of the floor and certainly with just leading with our compete level,” Elizabeth F. Turner ’98 Coaching Chair for Women’s Basketball Monique LeBlanc said. “I thought the team came out really strong in the first quarter, and displayed that foot on the gas mentality and presence.”

The Bears were hot from tip-off, netting 29 points in the first quarter. Olivia Young fed the ball to senior center Gianna Aiello to get Brown started just one minute into the game.

Brown continued on to a 12 point run in the first quarter with free throws from Aiello, junior guard Grace Arnolie and Ofunrein, two layups from Moreland, and a basket from first-year forward Aima Ofunrein. Young hit two three pointers before the end of the first quarter, including a buzzer beater.

The tables began to turn during the second quarter, with Stonehill netting 16 points to Brown’s nine. 16 points were not enough to even the playing field. Brown held a 14 point edge over Stonehill at the break (38-24).

Brown bounced back for rest of regulation, posting a total of 40 points across the third and fourth quarters. Olivia Young repeated her play in the first quarter, hitting two threes at the end of the third quarter with the last one being a buzzer beater.

The Bears continued to dominate through the final quarter. Senior guard Isabella Mauricio hit a couple of threes to further extend Brown’s lead over Stonehill. A good free throw would cap the Bears’ night off with a 78-45 win over the Skyhawks.

Four Bears finished out the game in double figures. Grace Arnolie led the team with 16 points. Olivia Young followed with 15 points, Aima Ofunrein finished with 13 points, and Gianna Aiello had 12.

“I feel like since we lost our leading socrer last year it’s opened the door for a lot of people to get more shots. I feel like also it doesn’t that one person has to average 20 points, it’s a lot more spread out,” said Olivia Young. “I was looking at the scoreboard and three people had nine points, and three more had eight. I feel like that evenness is really going to set us up for success and our ball movement helps with that.”
