Watch: Black bear interrupts deliveries at Connecticut bakery, devours 60 cupcakes

AVON, Conn. (WLNE) — A hungry black bear made its way into a garage at a Connecticut bakery last week.

Video surveillance footage at Taste by Spellbound in Avon captured the crime.

Employee Maureen Williams was putting the last of the boxes of cupcakes and baked goods into their delivery van when a bear wandered in, apparently with a sugar craving.

Williams evaded the animal by running into the kitchen and slamming the door. Her coworkers heard the commotion, and certainly weren’t expecting a four-legged visitor.

Staff said the bear moved one of the refrigerators, blocking the door behind Williams.

After collecting their bearings, owner Miriam Stephens called 911.

The employees then came up with an escape plan.

“Lisa then had a brilliant idea to go out the front and get in her car to drive around back and she started beeping her horn like a crazy person. She finally got him out and Maureen ran to the garage to close it as fast as she could,” Stephens said in a post on social media.

The bear devoured 60 cupcakes and lots of coconut cake.

“We’re safe but the cupcakes aren’t,” Stephens said in a post.

Staff let their customers know they can now find humor in the situation.

“They are more scared of us than us of them,” Stephens said in a post. “We all have had a good laugh about it at this point and think the bears are cute.”

The bakery even made a special batch of cupcakes on Saturday with Teddy Grahams on top.

The bear encounter came after reported black bear sightings across southeastern Massachusetts.

Authorities have warned people to be aware of their surroundings. Pets should be supervised while outside.

People are warned not to feed the bears or leave out anything they may want, like bird feeders and improperly stored trash.

Those who see a bear should make loud noises and clap while slowly walking away.

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife provided further bear safety tips.
