Pawtucket moves forward with plan to build new high school at McCoy Stadium

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — The City of Pawtucket appears to be moving forward with a plan to build a new high school on the site of the former McCoy Stadium.
This comes despite the interest of billionaire Stefan Soloviev to buy the stadium and continue using it for baseball.
In a letter to Soloviev’s company the Soloviev Group, Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien said that the city was “encouraged” by the interest to modernize the facility, but that “no productive dialogue” between the two groups had been made.
“With the Rhode Island Department of Education Stage 2 process for approval of the high school on the site well underway, and the School Department’s architects unconvinced both uses can be supported on the site, we believe it is time for our respective organizations to move forward,” the letter reads.
The letter concludes saying that the city hopes there are future opportunities to work together.
Voters approved the measure to build a new high school on the site in 2022. The stadium has sat vacant since 2019.
