Tips for children returning to school amid coronavirus

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) – With kids possibly returning to in-person learning amid the pandemic, we spoke with a child/adolescent psychiatrist about tips parents can use to address those concerns with their children.
Dr. Justin Schleifer of Bradley Hospital says a primary source of trauma to children is a sense of disruption in their routine, and parents should maintain as much structure as possible.
In doing so, this would limit the mental stress of the pandemic.
Some tips suggested by Dr. Schleifer are:
- Coming up with a daily schedule at home for children.
- Set up times for significant parts of their day like waking up and breakfast.
- Arrange activities for children when they return home from school.
- Scheduling some downtime.
- Give children space for quiet reflective time.
Another point Dr. Schleifer emphasizes is parents being aware of how they answer or react to questions about the pandemic, as kids will more often look to their parents for advice.
“I’d love to see parents providing opportunities for their kids to ask questions, to shed their feelings. I want parents to validate those fears. It’s okay for parents to reassure their kids but we don’t want them giving false reassurances. Don’t make any promises that you can’t follow up with. So reassure kids that you are doing everything you can at home. You’re doing everything you can to stay safe and healthy. You’re washing hands, social distancing, wearing masks when you go out, and remind them all of the positive things that are happening.”
