UPDATE: 27-year-old with COVID-19 set to leave hospital after week on ventilator
WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE): A 27-year-old who was hospitalized with COVID-19, is out of the ICU after a week on a ventilator at Kent Hospital.
ABC6 News first brought you the story last week of a mother from Coventry who shared her daughter’s story to spread awareness.
Nicole Sheldon, who has type one diabetes and is at high risk was admitted to the ICU.
Her mother, Jenifer Cross, was not sure if she would ever hear from her daughter again. So, when Cross found out her daughter was taken off the ventilator, it was a moment she will never forget.
“I said to the doctor, you don’t understand what you just did and the gift you gave me,” Cross said.
Sheldon is now expected to leave Kent Hospital on Tuesday and begin her road to recovery.
“She sent me a text saying I love you, mom and I just broke down,” Cross said. “I don’t think I have ever been so happy to receive a text from her.”
Sheldon will now recover at a field hospital. Cross said while her daughter was in the ICU, contact was limited. She only received a phone call once a day. A nurse did go out of her way to call Cross to make sure she heard the good news, but Cross feels the communication could be better.
“I got a little upset,” Cross said,” I said I haven’t even been able to have a facetime and you promised me that. I haven’t even and that. I haven’t seen my daughter. I just talked to her for the first time yesterday, verbally on the phone.”
Meanwhile, Sheldon will be kept busy during her recovery, reading messages from the community.
Our story last week grabbed the attention of hundreds of people who sent their well wishes.
“She’s touched by how many people were praying and supporting her through all this,” Cross said.
