9,900 doses of vaccine expected to ship to R.I. for younger children

The state department of health says 900 doses have already arrived in Rhode Island.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Nearly 10,000 doses of COVID vaccine for children ages 5-11 years old are expected to arrive Wednesday in Rhode Island, according to the state health department.

This comes after the announcement from the CDC on Tuesday for this age group to get the shot on Tuesday.

Thousands more doses are getting shipped to the Ocean State this week.

If you’re looking for ways to get your child vaccinated, there’s no shortage of where to get the shot.

  • Clinics at schools – School districts are partnering with municipalities to offer more than 130 vaccination clinics for first and second doses for children 5 to 11 years old. These clinics will be held during the evening starting the week of November 7th. These clinics are open to all children 5 to 11 years old (not just the children who attend the host schools). Unless otherwise noted, vaccine will not be available for older children and adults at school clinics. A list of clinics is available at https://covid.ri.gov/5to11vaccine.
  • Offices of some primary care providers. Please contact your child’s healthcare provider to learn more.
  • State run vaccination centersVaccinateRI.org.
  • Pharmacies- like CVS and Walgreens–  availability is expected this weekend.

RIDOH also will be hosting two Facebook Live sessions on November 8th (one in English and one in Spanish) with local pediatricians to answer any questions about the vaccine. The English session is slated to begin at 6 p.m. and the Spanish session at 7 p.m.

This is a developing story, check back for details.
