‘Grandpa George,’ Rhode Island’s Grandpa, dies at 96

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Grandpa George, the elderly Rhode Island man who became an online sensation, died at 96-years-old.

George Dowling, a Pawtucket native and proud Navy veteran, died peacefully in his home on March 27, according to his family.

Dowling went viral in 2022, after his granddaughter posted to Facebook, asking people to send him Christmas cards to help him get through the holiday season.

Dowling’s daughter, Suzan Brito, told ABC 6 News that he would get lonely around the holidays after his wife died.

In December 2022 Dowling started receiving cards from across the country.

He started off with about 500 cards, and by December 2023 he had over 30,000.

Dowling also received visits from the Pawtucket Police department and Pawtucket Fire department.

He was also recognized by Goff Middle School during celebrations for Wreaths Across America.

Dowling served in the Navy in the 40’s and was the last man on his ship, the USS Liguria, serving as a baker.

Visitation will be held April 6 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at William W. Tripp Funeral Home, at 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket.
