McKee backs vaccine after FDA approval, announces executive order for healthcare workers
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Governor Dan McKee emphasized the importance of the vaccine and announced a new executive order for healthcare workers Thursday afternoon.
In his a coronavirus briefing held at Green Line Apothecary, the Governor announced an executive order which will enable retired healthcare professionals to re-enter the workforce without sacrificing their pension.
“This action will secure healthcare settings with expert staff that will provide the best possible care,” McKee stated.
The Governor noted the challenges of retention and hiring the healthcare system has seen throughout the pandemic.
McKee and Department of Health Director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott put major emphasis on the FDA approval of the Pfizer vaccine for people ages 16 and older, saying the vaccine is safe and effective.
About 71% of Rhode Islanders are partially vaccinated while 64% are fully vaccinated, according to the Department of Health.
Another point of discussion was businesses and venues requiring masks and proof of vaccination status.
“We applaud and appreciate those businesses that have already taken action,” Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott exclaimed.
According to McKee, the state’s field hospitals are in the preparation phase, and ready if we need them.
