Misquamicut drive-in opens to sold out crowd

MISQUAMICUT, R.I. (WLNE) – The Misquamicut Drive-In Theater opened for the season on Friday night to a sold out crowd.

The theater posted five showtimes so far and each sold out in under 30 minutes.

“This is kind of crazy,” said Caswell Cooke Jr., the Executive Director of the Misquamicut Business Assoc.

The theater has room for 100 cars, but is only allowed to open at half capacity. All cars must be at least six feet apart. If a viewer opens their window or gets out of their car, they must wear a face mask.

All tickets are purchased in advance online and shown at the entrance.

Usually, the drive-in is open one night a week around this time of year and then three nights during the summer, but because demand is so high, that might change.

“We’ve pretty much decided that we’re going to go as many nights as we can and do other things. There’s people talking about concerts. Westerly High School wants to have their graduation here,” said Cooke Jr.

He also wants to expand their parking lot so more folks can come in.

“Maybe we can work with our neighbors– we have more parking behind us– maybe we’ll figure out how to get more cars in with our neighbors,” said Cooke Jr.

His team is also trying to figure out how to open the concession stand with people ordering through an app.
