Rhode Island leaders to speak on plan to shelter those experiencing homelessness this winter

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island leaders on Friday will outline the plan to shelter those experiencing homelessness this winter.
Gov. Dan McKee and Housing Secretary Stefan Pryor will speak on what the state is doing to prepare for harsh winter temperatures. Faith leaders and local officials are also expected to attend.
The meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the State House.
An encampment formed on the Smith Street side of the State House last year amid an ongoing homeless crisis in the state.
The state evicted those living there in December, turning them toward 24-hour warming centers in the city.
McKee announced this summer that the state’s Consolidated Homeless Fund will provide approximately $9.4 million to address homelessness next year.
The funding will go toward service providers, like emergency shelters and case management services, to combat homelessness in Providence, Pawtucket, and Woonsocket.
