How will Hurricane Milton stack up against other major recent storms?

Ferocious Hurricane Milton is charging its way across the Gulf Coast with Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida, in its sights. It approaches less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene battered the state, debris from which still lines some streets. Milton is expected to be an extremely dangerous hurricane when it comes ashore. It is expected to make landfall Wednesday. Other major hurricanes to hit the U.S. in the last several years have left hundreds dead and caused billions of dollars worth of damage. Those destructive storms include hurricanes Beryl and Helene from earlier this year.

Hurricane Idalia unleashes fury on Florida and Georgia, swamping wide stretch of coast

Hurricane Idalia made landfall as a dangerous Category 3 hurricane in the lightly populated Big Bend region, where the Florida Panhandle curves into the peninsula. Then it moved east of Tallahassee toward Valdosta, Georgia, where downed powerlines shut down part of the interstate highway into town. Coastal storm surge as high as 16 feet in places remained a major concern. More than 365,000 customers Florida and Georgia lost power as trees snapped in the winds and water turns roads into rivers. The National Weather Service says Idalia will hit the Carolinas as a tropical storm before moving out to sea.

People trapped, 2.5M without power as Ian drenches Florida

Hurricane Ian has left a path of destruction in southwest Florida, trapping people in flooded homes, damaging the roof of a hospital intensive care unit and knocking out power to 2.5 million people. It's now aiming for the Atlantic Coast as a tropical storm. One person is confirmed dead and a Florida sheriff said he believes fatalities are in the hundreds. One of the strongest hurricanes to ever hit the U.S. is drenching the Florida peninsula overnight, threatening catastrophic flooding.  Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said they still cannot access many of the people that are in need.
