Biden says in State of Union that US is ‘unbowed, unbroken’

President Joe Biden is offering a reassuring assessment of the nation's condition rather than rolling out flashy policy proposals as he delivers his second State of the Union address. He is declaring that America is “unbowed, unbroken” in the face of the pandemic and economic threats. He's appealing to Republicans to work with him to “finish the job" as a weary nation struggles with economic uncertainty, a wearying war in Ukraine and growing tensions with China. It's Biden's first speech to Congress since Republicans took control of the House in the midterm elections.

Trump calls for 'immediate' release of Mar-a-Lago search warrant

Former President Donald Trump is calling for the “immediate” release of the federal warrant the FBI used to search his Florida estate. In messages posted late Thursday on his Truth Social platform, Trump writes, “Release the documents now!” The Justice Department had asked a court to unseal the warrant earlier Thursday, with Attorney General Merrick Garland citing the “substantial public interest in this matter." Garland said he had personally approved the search warrant, which was part of an ongoing Justice Department investigation into the discovery of classified White House records recovered from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida, earlier this year.

Rhode Island to improve civics education to resolve lawsuit

Rhode Island will improve the way students are taught to participate in the political process in order to resolve a federal lawsuit over whether public school students have a constitutional right to a civics education. The state’s education department announced Friday that both sides in the suit have come to an agreement on how to strengthen civics education. The plaintiffs had been planning to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case. Lawyers for Rhode Island public school students and parents sued in federal court in 2018, arguing that the state wasn't preparing young people to fully participate in civic life.
