Rhode Island governor faces tough primary in bid for 1st full term

Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee is facing a tough challenge from Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea in Tuesday’s Democratic primary. McKee is seeking his first full term in office after taking over when two-term Gov. Gina Raimondo was tapped as U.S. commerce secretary. McKee is touting his leadership in navigating the state’s economic recovery from the pandemic. Rhode Island voters are also choosing nominees for the U.S. House, the Legislature and other state and local offices.

Healey will be the heavy favorite in November against the winner of the Republican primary. Former state Rep. Geoff Diehl, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, and businessman Chris Doughty, who is considered more moderate, are running for the GOP nomination. The 51-year-old Healey has touted her efforts to protect students and homeowners from predatory lenders. She also sued Exxon Mobil about whether the oil giant misled investors and the public about its knowledge of climate change. Her most frequent target, however, was Donald Trump.
